Led by setter Rob Steinberg and outside hitter Dylan Missry, the Flaming Arrows defeated McQuaid Jesuit (Rochester), 3-1, in the state championship match here, becoming the first Long Island school to win a state Class A title. Sachem North (18-0) won, 25-22, 25-22,22-25, 25-18.

Northport's Michael Brannigan, the reigning Suffolk Class A champion, led the way for Long Island in the state public schools boys cross country championships Saturday in Canton. Brannigan was seventh (15:54). Sachem North finished fourth in Class A.
